POKOTABI / PLACES WORTH A DETOUR
池袋ラーメン麺屋 Hulu-lu
A guide to choosing at Menya Hulu-lu Ikebukuro, from the clean-tasting duck wonton ramen and mildly spicy soy milk tantanmen to weekday-limited tsukemen. Spam musubi and almond tofu are also on the menu.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Diners who have tried the duck wonton ramen describe its flavour as clean rather than greasy, with a well-defined aroma from the broth. The menu also offers duck wontons as a 3-piece topping, so you could start with the classic soy sauce or salt ramen and add them.
The soy milk tantanmen, meanwhile, was described as less spicy than its rich appearance might suggest. One diner praised its fragrant flavour and the texture of the thin noodles. For more heat, spicy mixed RAMEN is another option. The listed menu prices it at 1,050 yen on its own or 1,380 yen as a set with Spam musubi, making it easy to add a little more after your ramen.
There is also the appeal of choosing a bowl offered only on certain days. The menu lists spicy tsukemen, available on Fridays only, as well as soup curry tsukemen. One diner who ordered the curry tsukemen said a staff member explained how to eat it. Check the serving days and details for limited-time dishes; otherwise, options include the classic soy sauce and salt SOBA or a bowl with chashu pork and a seasoned egg.
Almond tofu (listed at 400 yen) is available for dessert. You can make the noodles the centre of your meal and add Spam musubi or a side, or finish with something sweet, depending on how much you feel like eating.
